Lovecraft Adaptations Organized by Story

Rather than simply list the films chronologically (as is found on the IMDb), I'm sorting the films by which works they attempt to adapt.  The list is in the chronological order of the source material, not the films.  Additionally, some stories are very loose adaptations, but I'm putting them under one or more headings anyway if the plot follows that of an HPL story.  If they're more vague than that, I put them under the "inspiration" section.  Some of these may be mis-filed though.  I'm taking some at their word they they adapt the stories they are titled.  However, that isn't always the case.  For example, The Unnamable II has the secondary title "The Statement of Randolph Carter," but the story is merely an extension of the premise (just the characters, honestly) from "The Unnamable."

Titles marked with an asterisk are films I have seen.  You can read the reviews on this page which also covers some titles (including documentaries) not included here.  Titles which have been adapted are marked in bold.  All titles are included for both context and as placeholders for future adaptations.

These titles are listed on the IMDb, but as I mentioned above, there are many other films that use elements and even plots from Lovecraft's work.  An obvious example of the former is the Evil Dead series in which the Necronomicon features prominently.  John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness (1994) practically uses Lovecraft as a character and his works as the basis of the film.  Similarly, The Last Lovecraft (2009) pits HLP's indirect descendent against the Deeps Ones.  And both Prometheus (2012) and The Thing (1982) are unacknowledged versions of At the Mountains of Madness.  I went ahead and added them above because it's an oversight that ought to be more widely acknowledged and properly credited.

Note: Some video games are included above, but I haven't addressed any comic book adaptations even though there are quite a few good ones out there.  Many are quite faithful and imaginative.  For example, see the Lovecraft Anothology collections (two volumes) and the adaptation of
At the Mountains of Madness.
