Horror Anthology Shows and their Introductions

Several of the horror anthology series have intros inspired by that of The Twilight Zone.  In collecting those, I went ahead and listed all the notable horror anthology shows to date.  Those whose intros are merely instrumental music have no additional text with them.

The Outer Limits (1963-65)
Intro: There is nothing wrong with your television set.  Do not attempt to adjust the picture.  We are controlling transmission.  If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume.  If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper.  We will control the horizontal.  We will control the vertical.  We can roll the image, make it flutter.  We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity.  For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear.  We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set.  You are about to participate in a great adventure.  You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to The Outer Limits.

Wikipedia points out that "Later episodes used one of two shortened versions of this introduction.  The first few episodes began simply with the title screen followed by the narration and no cold open or preview clip."

The Outer Limits (1995-2002)

Intro: There is nothing wrong with your television.  Do not attempt to adjust the picture.  We are now controlling the transmission.  We control the horizontal and the vertical.  We can deluge you with a thousand channels or expand one single image to crystal clarity... and beyond.  We can shape your vision to anything our imagination can conceive.  We will control all that you see and hear.  [Pause as music builds]  You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the deepest inner mind to The Outer Limits.

Tales from the Darkside (1983-88)
Intro: Man lives in the sunlit world of what he believes to be reality.  But... there is, unseen by most, an underworld, a place that is just as real, but not as brightly lit... a DARKSIDE.

During the closing credits: The dark side is always there, waiting for us to enter, waiting to enter us.  Until next time, try to enjoy the daylight.

The Twilight Zone (1959-64)
Introductions: Season 1: There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

Season 2: You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind; a journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's the signpost up ahead—your next stop, the Twilight Zone.

Season 3: You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind; a journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. Your next stop... the Twilight Zone.

Seasons 4&5: You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas; you've just crossed over into the Twilight Zone.

Note that not listed here are the movie spin-offs (or vice-versa in the case of the Freddy series).  Additionally, several shows were themselves spin-offs of earlier series, such as Monsters having come out of Tales From the Darkside, and Night Gallery emerging from The Twilight Zone.  In fact (as noted above), The Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, and Hitchcock have all been resurrected at least once.  Also of note is that Tales From the Darkside was developed by many of the folks behind the team who created the Creepshow movie.  In fact, the Tom Savini referred to the Tales From the Darkside movie as "the real Creepshow 3."
